The terms of the lab deal have been condemned by some of the NFL`s most famous stars, including Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, Houston Texan defensive J.J. Watt and Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. All three players tweeted that they would vote in favor of rejecting the deal. After the players won the Mackey case in court, the NFLPA and the owners agreed on a new CBA that introduced a new system of refusal and compensation to replace the De Rozelle rule. The new system still limited the free agency of players. In the court`s decision, it was stated that compensation for draft choices was to be awarded on the basis of salaries received by outgoing independent agents. The 1977 agreement significantly improved some medical and retirement benefits for players and achieved a neutral reconciliation of all player/club disputes. Although the NFLPA Executive Committee voted against the proposal by 7 to 4 and only 17-14 votes (one abstained) among the team members, the new CBA was sent to vote to all players in the league. It was tight with 51.5 percent of players who approved the deal (1,019 for, 959 against).
The NFL Players Association voted in favor of the collective bargaining agreement scheduled for Sunday morning and ratified the contract until the 2030 season. "We are pleased that the players have voted to ratify the proposed new CBA, which will bring significant benefits to all current and retired players, increase employment, ensure further progress in player safety and provide our fans with more and better footballers," said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. "We appreciate the tireless efforts of the executive committee members of the NFLPA Management Board and management, both of whom have spent nearly a year in detailed and good faith negotiations to achieve this comprehensive and transformative agreement. In the 2020 agreement, a 17th regular-season game for teams can be added to the NFL`s game plan either during the 2021, 2022 or 2023 NFL season and the playoffs will be extended from 12 to 14 teams starting this season. After the owners voted to extend the playoffs on April 2, 2020, playoff teams will go from 12 to 14 teams, with six Wild Card playoff games instead of four and two teams receiving first-round playoff byes instead of four. The preseason is reduced from four games to three in seasons with 17 regular season games. In 1982, after the first two games of the season, NFL players went on strike again in an attempt to achieve a guaranteed percentage of the club`s and the league`s revenues. This strike lasted 57 days, making it the longest work stoppage in NFL history at that time. The strike ended with an interim agreement on 16 November, which included funds to cover the shortfall in players` wages during the work stoppage. Negotiators signed a new collective agreement on December 5. The agreement improved player benefits by introducing a new severance pay, increasing the minimum wage for players every year of service and adding new medical rights for players. The agreement also included a revised 1982 season plan, which had a nine-game regular season and a new playoff format that allowed 16 of the league`s 28 teams to qualify for the playoffs.
In addition, the agreement included the owners` guarantee that players would receive at least $1.6 billion in wages and benefits for the five-year term of the new contract. NFL players voted in favor of a new collective bargaining agreement by 1,019 votes to 959.
